MRCC & the Daily Mail investigate horse slaughter

In September 2006 we revealed that thousands of racehorses go for slaughter. Now, with the credit crunch even more are being killed for meat. Foals are being aborted and shot when they're just days old. Please don't back the cruelty any longer! ERR and Animal Aid also helped with the investigation.

MRCC was founded in 2005 and is the first charity of its kind in the Midlands - striving to rescue, retrain and rehome some of the 5000 horses leaving the racing industry every year.

With the demand for racing growing, more thoroughbreds are bred in a quest to find winners, however only a small percentage of these make the grade. We are here to provide a life after racing.

In 2006 the plight of horses on the continent being transported long hours, to be killed for their meat, was brought to our attention by Equine Rescue and Rehoming.

We have subsequently developed a branch of the chairty to help theses horses find a new life in the UK. This element of our work is only possible thanks to our patron and donor - Mr Phil Hart.

If you would like to make a contribution of any size, please contact us to find out more about what we are doing and donate to either our french horses or racehorses. Please see rescue page for photos of what we've achieved so far.

Every horse is a winner at the MRCC. We take in ex-racehorses from all over Britain and Europe and retrain and rehome them. Versatile, quick thinking and often mis- understood, the TB is a joy to work with. Alferenka (above) went from racehorse to dressage horse in a year, he competes from the centre:

FRENCH MEAT HORSES COME TO THE CENTRE

MRCC supports the very difficult job that ERR do. They work hard to save horses lives and stop the terrible live transportation of horses across Europe, for their meat.

Founder, Rebecca Menz has rescued 70 horses in 2008.

Well done Bex and the team and lets have a good 2009!

The MRCC's centre in Ludlow, Shropshire has received four horses that were destined for slaughter on the continent.

Kirsch, pictured above, was due to be transported from northern France to Southern Italy on a double-decker cattle truck. The 19 year old was found on a rubbish dump by the meat man. He would not have made the horrific journey.

Thanks to MRCC who bought the old boy - he has arrived safely at the centre and is looking like a different horse already.

Unfotunantly his little friend Pep also rescued by MRCC didn't make the journey. He collapsed mid journey despite making good progress in France. Rest in Peace Pep.

Rehabilitating the rescued French horses.

We will follow conventional methods to retrain the horses. Richard Adams, Richard Wrench and Serena Miller, our trainers will assess each horse and work through any problems that they might have.
